Worldly WisdomFrom Charlie Munger
First there's mathematics, like compound interest, permutations and combinations and most important probability.
Second, accounting, the language of practical business life.
Third, models from hard science and engineering.
Fourth, models from biology/physiology, coz all of us are programmed by our genetic makeup to be much the same.
Last but not least, microeconomics (pls notice he doesn't mention macroeconomics, personally I think it is more related to FX trade and also interesting). The most important concept would be advantage of scale, and do you guys know some of its disadvantages besides bureaucracy?
An old saying that should be posted here: "To the man with only a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."
What I like most is " The mind of man at one and the same time is both the glory and the shame of the universe."
For so many years I try to be smart, at least look like smart and it is totally insane. Reflecting on the so called worldly wisdom is a perfect way to keep one off bening overconfidence and still maintaining the passion for pursuing truth. Again for this week, for the first time in my life I understand people being the most important. Just stupid enough to overlook it. 12月1日 Words from IreneActually from her blog, very cute and inspirational.
like: "Power is when u have every justification to kill and u don't", followed by "Control is power", that will make it as "Control is when u have every justification to kill and u don't"....make a lot of sense, hiahia.
Also: "When u need me but do not want me, then I must stay; when u want me but no longer need me, then I have to go", sounds a little sad, but it can be explained by "I don't like getting attached to things if I know they won't last." Cold, less emotional and rational.
Then: "Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it." Such a good idea, I try.
Last: "...to look life in the face." I think most of the time we just can't know life for what it is and love if for what it is. However avoiding or denying won't do us any favor, the first and last place we need to consult should always be our hearts.
Strong recommendation: Find Apr 29th,2006 edition of <The Economist>, read the special report about Goldman Sachs and have some reflections of a great business and money. This is recommended by the Asia Chief Investment Officer of GS in this week's workshop. Those who don't want to waste time searching for it on the internet, drop me a message for the soft copy. |
